U.S. Boys Youth Team Comes Back to Beat Cuba

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Aug. 26, 2006) – Showing composure beyond the years of its players, the U.S. Boys Youth National Team came back from a two-set deficit to defeat Cuba, 3-2 (18-25, 23-25, 25-21, 25-21, 15-13), on Saturday in the semifinals of the 2006 NORCECA Boys Youth Continental Championship (U-19) in Bayaguana, Dominican Republic.

The victory qualifies the team for the 2007 FIVB Boys Youth World Championships and advances it to the NORCECA finals on Sunday, where it will face undefeated Puerto Rico, the team that defeated the United States in its first match of the tournament.

“The win over Cuba was fantastic,” said U.S. Head Coach Tino Reyes (University of Hawai’i). “The team just wouldn’t quit and kept fighting after being down 2-0. The staff kept preaching, ‘Let’s get better each practice and match’ and they certainly did. The boys did a great job.”

“We were intimidated at first by Cuba’s physical prowess,” said U.S. setter Joe Kauliakamoa (Las Vegas, Nev.). “After the first two sets, we found our confidence, which carried us through to victory.”

The U.S. Boys qualified for the semifinals with a 3-0 (25-16, 25-9, 25-23) quarterfinal win over Mexico.

With the victory on Saturday, the United States improved its tournament record to 4-1. It will meet Puerto Rico (4-0) in the final on Sunday, which is scheduled for 7 p.m., EDT. Puerto Rico defeated Canada, 3-1 (19-25, 25-16, 25-16, 25-19), on Saturday in the other semifinal match.

Puerto Rico defeated the U.S. Team, 3-0 (26-24, 25-21, 25-20) in the first match of the tournament on Tuesday.

“Tine Reyes, Shawn Patchell and Ken Shibuya Instituted a very demanding training and playing system for this team; similar to a collegiate system,” said Collin Powers, USA Volleyball men’s and boys high performance coordinator. “This team grew into that system every single match. While Cuba looked like a collegiate team physically, we played like a collegiate team systematically. The coaches did a great job.”
